INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS

1. Agreements on Academic and Student Exchange

Through academic and student cooperative exchange agreements established with a number of higher education institutions abroad, Shiga University is expanding and enhancing student / faculty exchange, joint research and educational research.

Currently, we have concluded university-wide academic agreements with 22 universities and 1 consortium.

2. Research Activities

In accordance with these agreements, faculty members of involved institutions take part in research visits of short and long durations.

The Center for Risk Research has been conducting joint research projects with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (China), Keimyung University (Korea), and the National Economics University (Vietnam).

Members of the Faculty of Education have been pursuing a variety of projects with Chiang Mai University and Chiang Mai Rajabhat University (Thailand) for more than 10 years.

Members of the Faculty of Economics are pursuing joint research with the Universidad de Guanajuato (Mexico).

In addition to these programs affiliated with partner universities overseas, many Shiga University faculty members have been actively pursuing their research, visiting foreign institutions of higher learning or participating in international conferences.

3. Student Exchange Programs

Based on the student exchange agreements with 16 universities and 1 consortium, we have been actively exchanging students; and the number of students participating exchange programs is increasing in recent years.

In the academic year 2015, we sent 13 students to the following universities: Northern Michigan Univeristy (USA), Lake Superior State University (USA), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (USA, University of Michigan, Dearborn (USA), Universidad de Guanajuato, Keimyung Univeristy, University College of Southeast Norway (Norway), National Kaohsiung University (Taiwan), Zuyd Hogeschool (the Netherlands), Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (China).

We have received 26 exchange students from Universidad de Guanajuato, Keimyung University, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, Xiangtan University (China), National University of Kaohsiung, National Taichung University of Science and Technology (Taiwan), Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology (Thailand), and Zuyd Hogeschool.

We have also hosted short-term study tours and student groups from our partner universities, such as Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, Deakin University and Universidad de Guanajuato.

4. Study Tours

Shiga University International organizes 6 study tour programs with a help from our partner universities abroad for Shiga University students. They allow students to study language and culture as well as to have intercultural experience during the program. Currently we have an Intensive English Language Program at Michigan State University, a “Thai Eco-Study Tour” in Thailand, a Korean Language and Culture Program at Keimyung University, a Chinese Language Program at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics, an Australian Studies Program at Deakin University, and a Spanish Language and Mexican Culture Program at Universidad de Guanajuato. About 50 students participate in these programs each year.

5. International Students

We have a total of 161 international students (undergraduate, graduate, research and exchange students) representing 11 countries. At the faculty of Education, we also accept MEXT scholarship students for teacher training for one year or 18 months.

A limited number of scholarships from private foundations are available for international students to help with their living expenses and tuition fees.

Shiga University International offers orientation for incoming international students at the beginnings of spring and fall semesters. The SUI also offers “student-tutor” support services, mostly for exchange students and first-year students on both campuses.

6. International House

The International House is a housing facility for international students and researchers.

It is a three-storied reinforced concrete building, located about five minutes’ walk from the Hikone campus.
